Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 1,251

Al Jazeera

A Russian drone attack on a 25-storey residential building in Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, injured eight people, including a four-year-old girl, the head of the city's military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, said. The overnight attack was part of a barrage of "324 drones, four cruise missiles and three ballistic missiles", across the country, the Ukrainian Air Force said. The attack was focused on Starokostiantyniv, home to a major air base, the Air Force added. Ukraine's Air Force said it downed 309 drones and two missiles, while 15 drones and two missiles hit targets in three locations, without specifying where. The attack started a fire in Kropyvnytskyi, in central Ukraine, local officials said, but no injuries were reported.

US Army deploys plastic coyotes attached to mini four-wheelers

Popular Science

Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. Sometimes, high-tech solutions aren't the best way to solve a problem. The US Army apparently came to that realization recently while exploring new methods to deter birds and other "problematic wildlife" from air bases. The military initially considered using Boston Dynamics' dog-like Spot robot to scare off the intruders, but they quickly realized it wasn't fast enough to effectively shoo the critters away. A far more effective--and affordable--solution presented itself in the form of three life-sized plastic coyote decoys mounted on top of toy-sized autonomous vehicles.

Russian drone, hypersonic missile strikes escalate on Ukrainian air base ahead of arrival of F-16s

FOX News

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to discuss how NATO members have bolstered their spending, the latest on the war in Ukraine and how the alliance can counter aggression from countries like Russia and China. Explosions reverberated across the pre-dawn sky as Ukrainian air defenses fended off a Russian attack on this small city in western Ukraine, home to an important air base and a frequent target of Moscow's strikes. Hours after the assault, the tidy streets of Starokostiantyniv had returned to a semblance of normality. But the June 27 attack was a stark reminder of the challenges Kyiv faces as it rebuilds its depleted air force and deploys the first U.S.-designed F-16s - fighter aircraft that Russia will be determined to ground or destroy. The first planes are expected to arrive this month, and Ukraine hopes they will boost forces struggling to repel a Russian onslaught along the front line, which includes devastating glide bombs that F-16s could potentially disrupt.

BANGKOK (AP) -- Myanmar's main pro-democracy resistance group said Thursday its armed wing launched drone attacks on the airport and a military headquarters in the capital, Naypyitaw, but the country's ruling military said it destroyed or seized more than a dozen drones used in the attacks. The opposition National Unity Government's "Defense Ministry" said in a statement that special units of the People's Defense Force used drones to attack the targets simultaneously. The group, known by the acronym NUG, calls itself the country's legitimate government, while the People's Defense Force is made up of many local resistance groups with a good deal of independence.

How Ukraine Just Showed That Russia Is Way More Vulnerable Than Anyone Imagined

Ukraine's drone strikes on two air bases deep inside Russia mark a new chapter in this war, but their significance--whether they escalate the conflict or alter the war's course in some other way--is unclear. Much depends on Moscow's reaction, and Kyiv's response to that, in the next several days. For now, it's worth probing some possibilities, though first let's lay out the implications of these strikes, regardless of their consequences. The strikes followed several days of massive Russian air and missile attacks on Ukrainian civilian targets, mainly power plants, shutting off heat and electricity as Ukraine's winter is getting brutal. The Russians launched those attacks from the airfields that the Ukrainians subsequently hit.

Russia launches 'massive strike' across Ukraine

Al Jazeera

Ukraine accused Russia of destroying homes in the southeast and knocking out power in many areas with a new volley of missiles on Monday, while Moscow said Ukrainian drones had attacked two air bases deep inside Russia hundreds of kilometres from the front lines. A new missile barrage had been anticipated in Ukraine for days, and it took place just as emergency blackouts were due to end, with previous damage repaired. The strikes plunged parts of Ukraine back into freezing darkness with temperatures now firmly below zero Celsius (32 Fahrenheit). At least four people were killed in the Russian attacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, adding that most of some 70 missiles were shot down. Energy workers had already begun work on restoring power supplies, he said.

Drones Are Now Top Threat In Syria: US Air Force Shoots Down Iranian Drone

International Business Times

A U.S.-led coalition aircraft shot down an unmanned drone in Eastern Syria's Deir al-Zour province Saturday, months after the U.S. Central Command expressed concern over the use of weaponized drones to attack U.S. forces in the region. "Coalition aircraft successfully engaged and defeated a UAS through air to air engagement in the vicinity of Mission Support Site Green Village," Reuters quoted coalition spokesperson U.S. Army Colonel Wayne Marotto. While the coalition refused to reveal the type of aircraft used or other details citing security issues, a report by Aviation Week said a U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle used an AIM-9X Sidewinder missile to hit the UAS. The report added that Brig. Gen. Christopher Sage, commander of the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing, was piloting the F-15E that fired the missile.

Japan to ban unauthorized drone flights over 15 U.S. military sites

The Japan Times

Japan will ban the flying of drones over 15 U.S. military facilities next month without advance permission as a measure against potential terrorist acts, the Defense Ministry said Friday. The 15 sites include Yokota Air Base in western Tokyo and the U.S. Marines' Camp Schwab on Okinawa. The restrictions, based on a law enacted last year, will be implemented on Sept. 6 following a notice period but have triggered concerns from media organizations over the potential disruption to news-gathering activities. Drone pilots will be barred from flying within 300 meters of the boundary of the designated sites, including the Henoko coastal district in Nago, Okinawa, near Camp Schwab where landfill work is underway to replace the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma despite local opposition. Police and the Self-Defense Forces are permitted to seize or destroy drones if they are flown near the designated zones without permission, and violators face up to a year in prison or a maximum fine of ¥500,000 ($4,700).
